What the terms mean.
We have done our best to describe
some of the terms used on this page
in order to help you decide on your
server requirements.
VM Ware - This is a
hardware based virtual server
environment. VMWare is number one in
the world for speed, reliability and
uptime. In a VM ware virtual
environment, several servers run on
the same hardware within their own
hardware and security realm. We run
Intel quad core cpu's and have many
banks of them along with many banks
of memory, so you are guaranteed to
get the cpu, memory and storage
allotment that you request.
Stand Alone Server - Defined
as a single 1U or 2U chassis server
with it's own internal cpu, memory
and hard drives. We still deploy
stand alone servers upon request,
but we feel the VM ware based
servers are better, faster, cheaper
and more reliable. If you want a
stand alone server, just e-mail us
at

CPU speed and bus speed. -
These days, cpu speed does not mean
much. Manufacturers are making
slower cpu's with higher bus speeds
(typically labeled FSB) and better
all around efficiency. Example. A
single 2.67ghz, 1333mhz bus cpu
which we use in our blade servers
can out perform 2ea. Intel P4
2.4ghz, 400mhz bus cpu's.
Hard Drives / RAID -
There are several types of hard
drives. SAS type drives in RAID 5
configuration are one of the best
and most reliable performers in the
industry. SATA drives are cheaper,
but are slower than SAS drives, but
compared to the old IDE drives from
the past, both types are 100 times
more reliable then the older IDE
drives were. RAID 1 and RAID 5
drives are redundant, so your server
will continue to work even if a
single hard drive fails.
Monthly Traffic - This is a
measurement of total inbound and
outbound traffic in megabytes that
pass through your server. We rarely
have customers who exceed the posted
maximums, so if you are concerned,
then please contact us to discuss
your needs.
Remote Desktop / Terminal
Services - Remote desktop
is included in every version of
Windows XP and Windows Vista. This
is the tool you may use to connect
to your server for management
purposes.
MS SQL Server Types - This is
a database server. There are several
versions. SQL Server Express edition
is the low end version typically
used in smaller implementations. The
Express edition has very few if any
management capabilities. SQL 2005
Standard and Enterprise editions are
typically used in moderate to high
traffic sites. These 2 versions have
full management capabilities.
Windows Server Types - There
are several flavors to Windows. The
Web Edition is typically used in web
page serving only instances with
smaller loads. You cannot run SQL
server and many other applications
on the Web Edition. The Standard and
Enterprise editions are the higher
end versions. Most any software will
run on either just fine. The
Enterprise version is typically only
needed in special cases such as
extreme high memory requirements or
server clustering. We typically run
Windows Server Standard edition in
most instances.
IIS, (Internet Information
Server)- This is the web server
component in Windows server. We
install this for you during
implementation of your server.
Technical Support - Please do
not confuse Technical Support with
server administration. They are not
the same thing. Technical Support
has to do with answering questions
and troubleshooting problems for
customers. We offer free, unlimited
technical support for all customers.
Server Administration goes beyond
that such as creating websites on
the server, setting up databases,
software installation, etc. By
default, 724 will install Windows,
IIS, SQL Server and SharePoint
initially for all customers in which
these components are required or
specified in your dedicated server
package. Installation of additional
software may incur additional
charges. NOTE: We do perform the
server security updates for you at
no charge.
Backup - The means of backing
up your server data in case of
failure or catastrophe. Backup is
not included on our dedicated server
packages in most cases unless it's
specifically put in your quote. We
recommend all customers backup their
data in one way or another. We have
several backup solutions available.
Contact us at
sales@724hosting.com to discuss
your backup strategy.
